Strippers has been an established business in Poole for more than 40 years. We provide a fast, high quality professional
service.
Our main business is stripping paint and varnish from old doors but we can also strip:
Wooden furniture
Garden furniture
Staircase spindles, handrails, skirting, architrave, etc.
Fire surrounds
Cast iron fireplaces
Metal gates etc.
Collection / Delivery
Most people bring their doors or furniture to our workshop and return to collect them when they are stripped (usually
the following day). We do also offer a collection and delivery service for a small additional charge. We collect doors in
Poole and Bournemouth every afternoon. The charge for this service is £10 added to your total stripping bill. We can also
collect items from other areas including Christchurch, the New Forest, Ringwood, Wimborne, Blandford, the Purbecks, Weymouth,
Dorchester etc. - prices available on application.
The stripping process
We use a hot caustic stripping system. Our system will remove oil- and spirit-based paints and varnishes.
We offer a 24-hour turnaround for doors and 1-2 days for furniture.
We can strip upto 20 doors at a time.
The process begins just before 6am each morning. All of the doors are loaded into the stripping tanks and every 90 minutes
they are all taken out and washed down with a high power pressure washer. They are then put back into the tanks and the whole
process reapeated as many times as necessary until all of the paint is removed. Once all of the paint is off the doors have
a final thorough wash down to remove any residue left on the surface. They are then put outside to dry in the air. The doors
are normally ready for us to deliver or for the customer to collect by 1pm.
Metal items such as cast iron fires are stripped overnight and as with the doors this process is repeated as many times
as necessary.

What
to do with your doors/ furniture ?
During the stripping process your doors or furniture
will have absorbed a certain amount of water, so when we return them to you they will be slightly damp. We advise that you
allow your items to dry out naturally inside your house, ideally in a dry, warm area. This may take approximately 1-4 weeks
depending on the atmosphere inside your house and the time of year. When thoroughly dry we suggest that you give the items
a light sanding over and then wipe down with white spirit to remove any dust prior to finishing, e.g. waxing, varnishing etc.
Occasionally a white powdery residue may appear on the surface of your doors - this is rare, but if it happens it is nothing
to worry about - this is simply salt coming out of the wood as it dries out. To remove this, lightly sand the affected area
and wipe over with diluted vinegar.
If you want your doors to be taken into your
hallway when we return them please put some newspaper down on the floor (as they may be damp).
If you want to wax your doors we rcommend that
you seal the doors with a coat of matt clear varnish before waxing. This gives the door better protection and reduces the
possibility of staining.
If you intend to paint your doors we recommend
using a primer called Zinsser BIN shellac base primer. This is the best primer/sealer we have found to date.
If you intend to stain or varnish your doors
we suggest that you test this on 1 side of 1 door only to begin with. This is because if you are unhappy with the finish that
you have applied or change your mind we may not be able to remove certain finishes from doors e.g. polyurethane varnish or
some stains.
What we cannot do
Note: we cannot remove water-based paints
or varnishes (or poly-urethane varnish). We find this situation very rarely as most paints on old doors are either
oil based or solvent based and it usually means that the doors have been stripped previously and then had a water-based primer
applied. However, there is no way of knowing what is under the paint until we put it through the stripping process, so the
full charge still applies. If you are unsure if this may be the case we suggest you have only 1 door stripped first
to ensure that the rest can be done. |
